The labs will be in Seattle (home to Amazon's headquarters) and Pittsburgh.

Facebook reportedly took the decision to open the labs after hiring three AI/robotics professors from the University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University.

Mike Schroepfer, Facebook's chief technology officer, said the three new hires will be tasked with recruiting more staff and training them too. "We're basically going where the talent is," he said.

One of the professors, Luke Zettlemoyer from the University of Washington, said in 2017 that he turned down an offer from Google that was three times his university salary ($180,000 according to public records seen by The New York Times).
